Inside
Take the original character of the property - hamstone elevations, an oak central staircase and original bookcase in the drawing room - undergo a two year renovation to add contemporary flair and mod cons including a state of the art cinema and you’ll begin to get a flavour of The Westerly.
- Style: Characterful spaces bedecked in contemporary furniture to provide a minimalist haven accessorised with striking artwork.
- Bedrooms: The seven bedrooms are uncluttered and spacious at The Westerly. The three en suite first floor bedrooms – two super kings and a double – are light-filled and airy. Muted colours and simple accessories maximise the green views from the huge windows. Up to the second floor, four bedrooms provide the perfect family floor – from the pastel pink princess twin – perfect for little girls, to the childrens single and two double bedrooms.
- Bathrooms: Three en suites for the first floor bedrooms, think huge mirrors, oversized shower enclosures behind free-standing glass screens, while the second floor bedrooms share a large marble family bathroom with roll top bath and power shower.
- For relaxation: Raid the selection of DVDs and head to the cinema room where a bucket of popcorn is a necessity! Blackout blinds, sumptuous purple velvet sofas and huge beanbags mean that you can chill out with your favourite movie whatever the weather.
- For recreation: Grab a boardgame or two and settle in the drawing room; light-filled in summer and the perfect haven in the winter, when the fire is roaring.
- Practicalities: There is a washing machine and tumble dryer at the property. The utility room has an American fridge with an ice dispenser, a handy place to store drinks.
Outside
Drive through the chocolate box village, where thatched rose-covered cottages to reach The Westerly. The largest of a small group of houses (including coach houses), the property has been split into two parts (the adjoining wing is currently unoccupied). The Westerly has its own 250-foot garden and benefits from the eight acres of private grounds.
Food and Wine
- DIY: The Poggenpohl kitchen/diner is a great space in which to socialise and get creative. Complete with log burner and funky seating it’s all clean lines and polished surfaces here. From the contemporary log burner to two dishwashers, two ovens and a large fridge freezer whilst the cupboards are stacked with Jasper Conran crockery and every utensil that you may need. A large table in the kitchen seats 14.
- In-house cuisine: With a branch of Trencherman’s of Dorset (the local deli) at the entrance to the estate, there’s no excuse not to eat well during your stay. Everything from locally produced meats and cheese to home cooked ready meals prepared on the premises, with a selection of fine wines to choose from, as well as other treats such as cakes and biscuits. With notice they will also cater for groups or parties.
- Eating out: There’s a small pub in the village and some great local pubs serving good food near the house (the pub in Corton Denham, four miles away, for example).
Getting there
- By Car: The property is around a 2 hour drive from London
- By Train: The nearest station is Sherbourne which is around 3 miles from the house. London to Sherbourne is a journey of approximately 2hrs 10 mins from London Waterloo).
- By Air: Bristol Airport is around 40 miles from the property
Out and About
- Horse Riding: This is terrific horse riding country. You can either book lessons at local stables and hacks can be arranged at a stable two miles away which has exclusive rights to the grounds of Sherbourne Castle (prior notice essential).
- On the water: Sailing and fishing by permit on Sutton Bingham Reservoir, and sailing and fishing also available at Weymouth
- Day trips: Have a day out to Bath, Exeter or Taunton, Sherbourne is a historic abbey town with lovely shops and cafes.
- Head to the beach:The stunning Dorset coastline is around half an hour from the house. Relax at Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.
